How to Prepare for Your First Custom Knife Show
Exhibiting at your first custom knife show is an exciting milestone for any knifemaker. It is an opportunity to showcase your work, meet collectors, connect with other makers, and become part of the larger custom knife community. But a successful show starts well before you arrive at the venue. A little preparation can make the experience much more enjoyable and productive.
Choose Your Knives Carefully
Bring a selection that represents who you are as a maker. Include some of your signature styles along with pieces that showcase different techniques, materials, or designs. Your table should give collectors a good sense of your work without feeling overcrowded.
Make sure every knife is clean, finished, and ready to be handled or presented. Consider preparing a simple inventory list with knife descriptions and prices so you can keep track of what you brought and what sells during the show.
Create an Attractive Table Display
Your table is your first impression. You don't need an elaborate display, but your knives should be easy to see and appreciate. Think about how you want your work presented and make sure your display is organized, professional, and consistent with your style.
Bring anything you need for your setup, including table coverings, knife stands or cases, signage, business cards, price tags, and any other display materials you plan to use.
Bring Information About Your Work
Collectors often want to know more than the price of a knife. Be prepared to talk about your materials, construction methods, inspiration, and the story behind particular pieces.
Business cards or small information cards are also helpful. Even if someone doesn't purchase a knife at the show, giving them a way to remember and contact you can lead to a future sale or commission.
Be Ready to Talk With Collectors
One of the best parts of a knife show is meeting collectors face-to-face. Don't be afraid to start a conversation. Talk about your knives, your process, and what inspires you.
At the same time, remember that not every conversation needs to end in a sale. Building relationships is an important part of exhibiting. A collector who doesn't purchase today may become a customer, friend, or supporter of your work in the future.
Network With Other Makers
Take time to walk the show and meet other exhibitors. Custom knifemaking is a community, and some of the most valuable connections you make may be with fellow makers.
Share ideas, learn from one another, and enjoy the opportunity to meet people who understand the dedication that goes into the craft.
Most Importantly, Enjoy the Experience
Your first knife show is about more than selling knives. It is about putting your work in front of people, meeting collectors, learning from other makers, and becoming part of the community.
Don't worry about having the biggest table or the most knives. Focus on presenting your best work, telling your story, and making connections.
Whether you sell one knife, several knives, or simply leave with a handful of new relationships and ideas, your first show is an important step in your journey as a custom knifemaker.
